  24. Howdy:  I'm contemplating the purchase of a notebook computer that
  25. runs some version of Linux. Possibly Linpus. The task at hand is to
  26. set up a cable connection between the notebook and my desktop PC,
  27. which is running Windows XP, over which I can simply and easily
  28. transfer files (mostly text, but perhaps binary as well) on a fairly
  29. regular basis -- every other day or so.
  30.  
  31. Questions:
  32. 1) Are there versions of Kermit available (say, like, on the Columbia
  33. U. site http://www.columbia.edu/kermit) that support this operation?
  34.  
  35. 1a) If there is a ver that works under Linux (or one of its
  36. manifestations), would it be necessary to recompile it from source on
  37. my particular system?

  39. 2) What sort of cabling would I need to do this? I know nothing about
  40. USB connections at all -- whether they even support this sort of
  41. application. I probably will not have an RS-232 serial port on the
  42. notebook, but I understand that there exist adapters that will connect
  43. USB to an RS-232 wire. Would such a contraption mess up the kermit
  44. operation?

  46. 3) Does anyone know about file format compatibility issues between
  47. Linux and Windows? Do I have to worry about whether, say, a text file
  48. or an RTF file created on the Linux side would even be readable/system-
  49. compatible with the Windows XP OS?  In particular, compatible  with
  50. the Windows file system -- NTFS style. One would hope that the Kermits
  51. on each end would somehow handle this transparently.
